Prof Martin Flück PD PhD MSc

Prof Flück has an academic interest in exposing the signalling pathways of muscle plasticity as it pertains to the tuning of muscle power and endurance with exercise and their deconditioning with disuse. This is achieved by a holistic approach combining somatic gene transfer with genetical genomics in animal models of activity-dependent muscle remodeling. His research interests are in signalling pathways of muscle plasticity in health and disease and he has teaching specialisms in Muscle Cell Physiology, Chemistry and Molecular Biology. Prof Flück presented plenary lectures at the International Conference on the Biochemistry of Exercise (Guelph, Canada) and organised the international workshop on ‘Omics: Assembling Systems Biology’ (Centro Stefano Franscini, Ascona, Switzerland). Patent and publications on the gene therapy of muscle repair and measures against loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia). Prof Flück is also Editor for the European Journal of Physiology (Pflueger’s Archive), Editor for the European Journal of Applied Physiology. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the French Dystrophy Association, Research fellow in the Medical Faculty, University of Birmingham and Guest Professor at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Insel – Hospital University of Berne, Switzerland.

Dr Andrea Malaspina

Dr Malaspina is a consultant neurologist at Spire Hartswood, at Barts and The London NHS Trust and at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is a senior lecturer at Queen Mary University of London where he is developing a research programme at the Trauma and Neuroscience Centre at the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular science. Andrea trained in clinical neurology in centres of excellence in Italy and Austria, and at Imperial College, Barts and the London School of Medicine, where he has also developed a post-graduate research career. Following the award of a PhD in molecular neurobiology from Imperial College in 2001, Dr Andrea Malaspina has worked in the above NHS and academic Institutions, with an active role in clinical neurology and a significant involvement in clinical research. In 2009, he was appointed Co-Director of the North-East London and Essex Regional Care Centre for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and MND Research Director for DeNDRoN, a large research organisation in neuroscience. Whilst Dr Malaspina’s clinical and research focus has always been in neuromuscular disorders, his clinical experience has encompassed all fields of clinical neurology and the complexity of molecular medicine applied to everyday clinical practice. He has been in private practice since 2002 and offers rapid access for patients, ensuring prompt decisions about investigations and treatments. These include structural and functional CT and MRI imaging, targeted neurophysiology like EEG and EMG/nerve conduction studies and appropriate molecular investigation.  Building on his academic experience and on his contacts with expert colleagues, he aims to address unanswered questions in a very difficult medical discipline. Dr Malaspina has always adopted a professional approach to the human and personal side of each individual’s problems, along with a strict scientific-based method in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. Sports like rock-climbing and skiing are still possible despite his busy work schedule.

Dr Dylan Morrissey

Dr Morrissey has over 20 years experience of working in sports and exercise medicine. He completed an MSc at University College London in 1998 and a PhD in 2005 at King’s College London.
